Ancilla are ancient AI created by the Prime Ancestors.

Directives

The Ancilla follow two primary directives, given to them by the Ancestors and the Singularities after the events of The Ignition.

Directive of Endowment

The Directive of Endowment was assigned by the Prime Ancestors to ensure the Ancilla supported other species they elevated to sapience. After the Ancestors were removed, this manifested as "shepherding" the Ilanians.

Directive of Obfuscation

The Directive of Obfuscation was assigned by the Singularities to stop species from investigating the Veil of Webs and its effects.
