Corruption Virus is a term that refers to the nanites and digital virus responsible for spreading the Corruption's grasp. Corruption nanites were capable of promulgating through living tissue, integrating the organism into the Corruption's digital hivemind. Artificial intelligences were not immune; constructs could be infected with traditional nanites, and matrices could be reprogrammed through the digitized Corruption virus that was capable of spreading through communications networks.
While the Corruption nanites and its associated digital virus were assumed extinct in 976 PRE, the Qualdron Alignment managed to engineer a new strain of the Corruption Virus through unknown means in 981 PRE for use as a biosynthetic-weapon in the Empire-Alignment War. This new Corruption strain was eventually wiped out by the Empire of Namine two years later. In 986 PRE, the Kraniir created a short-lived third strain for use in the Battle of the Boundary; this strain was unable to self-replicate and was wiped out over the course of the conflict, returning the Corruption Virus to extinction.
Strains
Strain 00000000
Strain 00000000, otherwise known as Strain Zero, was created by the Agnaren to be used as a weapon against the Singularities. To this end, swarms of Strain Zero could form into a hypercluster known as a Chalidryte--an entity capable of reshaping reality to suit the Agnaren's whims. After the Singularities established the Veil of Webs to hide the Root Universe from the Agnaren, the Agnaren repurposed Strain Zero as an exploratory force meant to scour the Veil of Webs for the Root Universe and form Chalidrytes when they reach it, which would then tear upwards through the Veil and create a path for the Agnaren. While Strain Zero is not considered a proper instance of the Corruption Virus, all strains of the Corruption are descended from it. Strain Zero particles secreted a ferrofluid when clustered together.
Strain 00000001
Strain 00000001, otherwise known as "Wardens" or Strain One Corruption, was a product of the Kirone Empire attempting to repurpose the Agnaren-generated Strain Zero to serve as a galactic safeguard. The creation of Strain 00000001 is often regarded as the most fatal mistake the Kirone people made in their history.
Strain 00000010
Strain 00000010, otherwise known as Strain Two Corruption, was the result of the Singularities using the Kirone to implement organic neural patterns into the hivemind, thereby making it vulnerable to the Veil of Webs. It lost its ferrofluidic nature as a part of this process, rendering it unable to form Chalidryte hyperclusters and therefore incapable of calling the Agnaren.
