The F/SS-120 Mnemosyne, named after the Greek god of Memory, is a human-design space-superiority fighter designed and built by Ironclad Dynamics for use by the Esperance Pact. The fighter was designed to close the performance gap between contemporary star fighters from other major factions, such as the Acid Rain and Starlight Marauder, and to replace the Artemis-2. Combat-testing to prove its capability is still ongoing.

Design & Construction

The Mnemosyne was designed from the lessons learned fighting the Holy Conglomerate of Litiket and richer, organized crime factions that made use of surplus Empire of Namine fighters. The fighter, with its flying-wing configuration, emphasizes space-flight performance as opposed to atmospheric flight performance in combat, while still retaining the ability to efficiently fly in atmosphere.

The fighter is 10 meters in length, 40 meters in width, and 5 meters in height.

Armament

The Mnemosyne is armed with two gimbaled pulse cannon pods mounted forward of the wing roots. Unlike its predecessor, the Artemis-2, the powerplant of the Mnemosyne is designed to properly handle the power draw of the cannons, and can support fire of around 300 rounds per minute for 5 seconds (a burst of 25 shots) before needing to cool down. The vessel is also armed with a 25mm rail-gun autocannon turret with 250 rounds, mounted directly under the nose.

The Mnemosyne also has large internal missile bays far outstripping previous human fighters, that can be bolstered with the addition of external hardpoints to carry more ordnance.

Propulsion

The fighter is equipped with only EM-engines, and lacks the additional atmosphere-breathing plasma turbo-jets that the Artemis-2 had. The EM-engines, mounted in two nacelles at the ends of the wings, serve as its primary propulsion and maneuvering engines with two facing each axis. These engines are further supported by micro maneuvering thrusters in various places on the hull. The inclusion of only EM-engines keeps the maintenance on an already complex starfighter from as overbearing as it would if they were to include atmosphere breathing engines.

The EM-engines coupled with a strong power-plant make the vessel a much more maneuverable fighter in space than its predecessor.

Variants

  • X/SS-120: Prototype model.
  • X/AS-120: Prototype with forward-swept wings to increase atmospheric maneuverability.
  • F/SS-120A: Planned standard production variant.
  • F/SS-120B: Planned two-seat trainer variant.
