The Online Gaming Zombie Minecraft Server, in one of its many randomly-selected MOTDs

"Copyright violation, Starscream? This is bad comedy."

The Online Gaming Zombie Minecraft Server (often called simply the server, abbreviated as OGZMC, and known by the domain name used to connect to it, mc.onlinegamingzombie.com) is a dedicated Minecraft server run by Bryan. During the server's original 2011 - 2015 run, an informal, recurring text-based roleplaying event took place from roughly 2012 - 2013, laying the groundwork for the Unbroken project.

History

The OGZMC server was started by Bryan in November of 2011 to simply provide a place for his friends to play Minecraft together. At an unknown time in early-to-mid 2012, the very beginnings of the recurring text roleplay (RP) event that was to become Unbroken started thanks to a new world on the server called the "Disaster World," a destroyed version of the server's main world. The RP was simply about survival in the dilapidated Capital City, until later on when character development steepened, giving way to characters such as Avaene, Joseph, Nikan, Thegalet, Thisposa, and Vespid.

Sometime in 2013, the RP ceased taking place in Minecraft, moving to other platforms and growing into the original story now known as Unbroken.

The original Online Gaming Zombie Minecraft Server was hosted through a VPS company. On August 19, 2015, the VPS company wiped the virtual machine on which the server was hosted, resulting in the loss of the server in its entirety. As far as Bryan is aware, the VPS company did this because Bryan's father, who also utilized the virtual machine, requested that the VPS company upgrade the machine; neither Bryan nor his father were aware that the VPS company's procedure for upgrading a virtual machine involved wiping the existing virtual machine, so Bryan did not export the backups that existed on the VM to a safe location. This resulted in the 2011 - 2015 run of the server becoming lost forever (except for a locally-stored early backup of a world based on Namine). Two years later in 2017, Bryan started a new Minecraft server using one of Tyler's Minecraft saves as the primary world. This server would operate unaffiliated with the original OGZMC server for about six years.

On February 18, 2022, Bryan discovered a partial backup of the 2011 - 2015 server's main world on his laptop. The backup is dated to September 3, 2012; rather early in the server's lifespan. While many key recognizable locations such as the Capital City and Tdott Village exist in this 2012 backup, the state of the backup does not reflect what the main world looked liked in its entirety by the time it was deleted in 2015. Furthermore, the 2012 backup is marred by a world generation error that resulted in some chunks being lost, such as the chunks containing Devin's Villa and the chunks containing the side of the Capital City courthouse's wall facing the ocean.

On May 7, 2023, Bryan connected the mc.onlinegamingzombie.com domain name to the 2017-generated server, marking the first time since the 2011 - 2015 server's lifespan that a Minecraft server ran on the mc.onlinegamingzombie.com domain name. The ability for players to connect to the 2017-generated server through mc.onlinegamingzombie.com more or less legitimized it as a continuation of the original 2011 - 2015 OGZMC server even though no world data (not even the 2012 main world backup) from the 2011 - 2015 OGZMC server exists on the 2017-generated iteration. The 2017-generated server had no formal association with the 2011 - 2015 OGZMC server until the mc.onlinegazmingzombie.com domain name was assigned to it about six years into the 2017-generated server's lifespan.

Present Day

The 2017-generated server, recognized as the present-day OGZMC server since the mc.onlinegamingzombie.com domain name was assigned to it, is online and running Minecraft 1.19 as of April 19, 2024. Virtually all Unbroken-related Minecraft builds reside on this server.

Notes

  • The mc.onlinegamingzombie.com domain name was given to Bryan in 2011 by his father. While Bryan did not choose it himself and would likely have picked a different name if possible, the domain name is recognizable to its original players and carries a certain degree of significance in the server's history. As such, Bryan has kept the domain name around rather than selecting a more aesthetically-pleasing new one.
