The Skreeon Accelerator is a type of particle weapon commonly used by the Ashderian Regime. It is used in everything from small arms, to starship weapons. The technology also has various scientific applications as well.

Technical Function

These weapons emit and accelerate (historically via magnetic, and currently via graviton) Skreeon particles out of a barrel-like structure for destructive effect. "Bonding" the particle with certain other elementary particles can alter the damage effect of the weapon with some tradeoffs, essentially giving the weapons "ammo types." This function usually takes the form of swappable modules, though some function types have to be implemented as permanent modifications. While this increases the versatility of the weapon system to be more in-line with that enjoyed by ballistic weapons, it still does not completely render ballistic weaponry obsolete.

Skreeon particles technically should not exist, and therefore "decay" into electromagnetic radiation the longer they do exist. This gives Skreeon particles a characteristic blue color as they fly towards their intended target.

Effect Variants

Effects on target can be altered via the use of quantum technology which bonds other subatomic particles to the Skreeon. These effect variants usually come with some sort of specific tradeoff, be it in higher heat generation, recoil, or durability burn. All variants require additional power.

Bond-Breakage

This is the standard, unmodified effect Skreeon has on its target. Molecular bonds of the target are broken, and heat is released. Destroys matter and results in heat-damage to the target.

Stealth

This particular combination shifts its decay to ionizing radiation, making it mostly invisible to the naked eye and most optical sensors. The typical bond-breaking effects are retained, with the addition of the dangers of ionizing radiation (though this radiation is not emitted when the particles contact matter, only as the particles decay in-flight.) The effects on target are virtually identical to bond-breakage,

Explosive-Breakage

The particles break the bonds of the target, and release energy violently, creating a minor explosive effects on the target. This variant while more traumatic, lacks the penetration potential of bond-breakage and stealth Skreeon effects.

Disintegration

This effect augments the standard effects of the particles, causing them to penetrate through the target via "paths of least resistance". Enough energy can cause a target to completely disintegrate, along with some of the matter the target is standing upon. Too much energy transmitted to the target will cause the excess Skreeon to shoot-out in random directions, or cause heavy disintegration damage to any matter connected to the object, both of which have high potential to result in collateral damage. Because of the characteristics of how the Skreeon particles spread through the target, shot-placement is more important with this variant than others. This is the most dangerous variant, due to the potential for collateral damage. This also has the least range of the effects when used in atmosphere, as this particular variant of Skreeon particles tend to disperse through the air quickly.

Pseudo-Ballistic

This effect mimics ballistic weaponry until the particles dissipate. This effect notably causes the weapons to recoil, depending on the calculated mass of the pseudo-projectile. Standard Skreeon Accelerators with a module installed will fire a projectile that is typically spherical in shape; effectively the equivalent to ball ammunition. Specially designed, ballistic-only Skreeon weapons can emit their projectiles in specialized shapes such as hollow points, to further, albeit slightly, alter their effects on target.
