The Phyrexian Coalition is a widespread, space-faring empire comprised of Phyrexians within some bumfuck space known as the Milky Way.

History

Foundation of the Early Phyrexian Coalition

The Great Divide

Early Phyrexian History has been plagued with internal conflicts, a clash of culture and ideologues that slowly shaped the course of Phyrexian development. City-states are at constant odds with another as it progressed towards the nuclear and space-age of the Phyrexians. Upon development of the first FTL engines for the race into space, four major city-states diverted off and colonized their own separate planets creating a proto-party system that still divides the present coalition’s senate. Identity politics were reinforced upon these separate planets that later lead to this slow strife of out-competing each other in resources and other means. War followed soon between the planets as tensions rose to a boiling point of no return. The warring factions fought for eight years, with each side losing an equivalent number of men it came to a white peace deal, with the planets forming a loose coalition among each other. The coalition, however, was in name as each planet held its own rules, politics, and identity within. This caused problems when dealing with issues that dealt with multiple bodies of the coalition, which dragged referendums to a grind as each side have to come to a thorough agreement. But this coalition of planets would soon be reinforced into a single united entity when the Keel’van Plague hit.

Keel'van Plague

After a century of colonizing Itria IV, a pathogen formed from the Gangret Flower in a bizarre mutation that affected the Phyrexians. The pathogen caused severe afflictions of the body, such as black fluid filling the lungs, vomiting blood, boils, and cysts, cases of skin rot and infertility. It passed from person to person, person to ship, and ship to planet. It ravaged the Phyrexian homeworld and colonies which lead to the dark past of the Coalition, The Great Purge.

The Great Purge

With the Keel'van Plague afflicting a majority part of the Phyrexian populace on all their worlds, the young Phyrexian Coalition was faced with the total annihilation of their species. The senate was faced with no option but to resort to a mass genocide of the infected populations to prevent further spread of the pathogen. Hellfire rained onto infected population sectors of cities, purge squads roamed door-to-door putting families into firing squads and burning their corpses afterward, and the butchering of carriers to find a cure for this pathogen. After two decades, the cure was found at a steep cost. The Phyrexians had a population count that went into the trillions across all their worlds, but by the end of the Purge, there was roughly around 500 billion. This was the darkest part of the Phyrexians’ past, left to be unsaid and move on.

Foundation of the Modern Phyrexian Coalition

Operation Broken Sword

Barely a decade later, a Phyrexian merchant vessel was assaulted by unknown assailants. More civilian vessels were also attacked along a trade route to the Zyrex Merchant Republic, a close trading partner to the Coalition. A military frigate was sent to investigate these attacks. After a short naval battle with a hostile vessel, the raiders were discovered to be apart of a xenophobic ultra-nationalist group of the Kyrigan Empire, the Iron Claw. The Phyrexian Coalition sent an ultimatum to the Kyrigan Empire demanding the leader of the group to be turned over, as well as other high ranking officials to seek trial and execution. This was met with the refusal of the terms and resulted in a declaration of war between the Phyrexian Coalition and the Kyrigan Empire. Battles raged across worlds, with heavy casualties from both sides. The Kyrigans had one thing over the Phyrexians in the war, their numbers. Fearing the war would be lost due to the number of men being lost, and being after the Purge, the senate agreed to start the experimental cloning process to replace their lost numbers. With the newly created clones, the Phyrexians marched in force straight to the Kyrigan capital system. Legion after Legion swarmed the Kyrigan capital planet. After months of besieging the planet, the Kyrigans surrendered in a white peace which resulted in the annexation of their system as well as the public execution of the ultranationalist leader.

Battle of Volkrundr Pass

The Battle of Vulkrundr Pass was apart of the conflict between the Phyrexians and the Kyrigans on the Kyrigan homeworld. The Phyrexian forces in this fight were led by General Andromicay Vilitanis and his 9th Legion in ongoing trench warfare along what is called Volkrundr Pass, a massive gorge along the Tianderi Mountains. Days pass as the Phyrexian forces were losing ground being pushed more inward into the gorge creating logistical issues with obtaining supplies along with the fact that they were being pushed into a corner and an eventual death trap for a majority of the forces. The Kyrigans managed to sneak past Phyrexian forces and plant explosives into the walls of the gorge in order to collapse it on top of the retreating Phyrexian forces. When a majority of the Phyrexian forces were pushed into the gorge, the Kyrigans set off the trap as the gorge walls collapsed killing many while trapping Vilitanis and his clique of officers under rubble. While Vilitanis was trapped under the rubble, he had a revelation of a diety reaching out to him that wasn’t the Old Gods but of a new god, Metromamicus. After a few days, Vilitanis and other survivors were rescued from the rubble of the gorge and sent off to recover from their wounds while the war was on-going.

Government

The ruling body of the Phyrexian Coalition is a Senate consisting of 325 members. While most belong to a neutral party, a majority identifies being associated with one of the four major parties. The Senate votes as a whole on rulings and what is best for the Empire, but there are lots of arguments and disputes between the parties.

Political Parties

Military

Early Phyrexian military structure was loose planetary based armed forces that focused on all-round combat but struggled to maintain their flexible structure. During Operation Broken Sword with mass cloning, the Phyrexian Coalition decided to base their new reinforced military forces around legions, which for the most part focused on certain aspects of warfare rather than try to maintain a force that attempts to focus on every aspect. There is some noticeable concerns regarding the current legions as a majority of them are seemingly under the control of one of the four parties within the Coalition.
