Thegalet: Do you know what "court martial" means, Fishpaste!? Nikan: It means nothing when you're Commander.

Nikan's response to Thegalet, after a gutsy maneuver during a covert mission.

Sovereign Commander Nikanicreon Dara'croix, also known as Commander Hazard [1], or The Familial Terminator, is a primary character in Unbroken. An experienced Ashderian tactician, warrior, and commander, he's participated in multiple wars, various engagements, and been present for several pivotal moments in Ashderian history. He currently leads the military faction of the Ashderian Regime-- the only known Ashderians.

Early Life

To be added later.

Rise to Power

The position of "Sovereign Commander" is only opened during an extinction/governmental collapse-level crisis. The position satisfies several roles; it allows for executive decisions to be made rather quickly, without bureaucracy, and keeps control of the Regime in an organic's hands. Currently, the Ashderian Regime is operating under an extended extinction-level crisis state, which, by law, necessitates Nikan's position.

When the Ashderian Regime's current fleet was organized by the original Vokyran Government, they needed someone with the guile and experience to lead a fleet with a mission as ambitious and perilous as theirs. The fleet was to not only be sent forward in time, but to another galaxy, leaving large shoes for anyone to fill. Nikan fit the bill, so he was chosen as Sovereign Commander of the fleet.

Nikan's power has been reduced since he returned from being stranded on Terreki. Most civilian administration functions have been moved to a council titled the Civilian Assembly. Nikan retains a good portion of control over the military, partly due to the overwhelming support from the thirteen Navarchs. Nikan retains the ability to make sweeping executive decisions when time is short, thus he retains the ability to over-rule the Civilian Assembly's authority in many cases. This action, however, has not been necessary, and would damage his position as leader.

The Civilian Assembly has expressed concern and disapproval for some of his decisions, many of his actions, and his habit of going on important and dangerous missions himself. A notable event that caused panic was the Derelict Incident. They've attempted many times to impose restrictions on his actions, and in a few cases, succeeded. For example, he now must report most military actions to the Civilian Assembly directly. Some worry the power and extended nature of his rule is a slippery slope to tyrannical rule--worried that he'll seize full control and radicalize the Regime not unlike he did with the Enlightened Ones.

Nikan himself believes that a major factor in the Assembly's distaste for him is the role he currently plays in preventing the civilian section of the government from fully uniting with the military section to form a full, singular entity. It's a merge he in fact agrees with, but believes now is not the right time.

Personality

Nikan's personally is reserved.  He's thoughtful, collected, and analytical.  He's known for his tempered temper,[2] with little that sets him off. Many in the Regime view him as wise, and often seek his council and advice. When alone, or with trusted comrades, Nikan can be playful, for lack of better terms.

Some say he's trying to live the childhood he never had, in these cases.

Trivia

  • Nikan's nickname, appointed by his wife, is "Ni-ni". Thegalet and Nova find this absolutely hysterical, and use it to torment and insult him.
  • Nikan was born to the tyrannical leader of the Currai Imperium.[3]
  • Nikan is one of the few Ashderians awarded with biological immortality, one of Ashderian culture's highest honors.
  • Nikan killed Tartirus, and no one seems to care. In fact, both Thegalet and Nova have, on multiple occasions, suggested awarding Nikan a medal for this.

Notes

  1. This name only served as a placeholder in pre-wiki Unbroken for Nikan's name. It is completely non-canon.
  2. Fucking hell.
  3. The state of his birth parents' political power is now subject to a change in canonicity.
